les psychotiques sont des animistes comme les autres #24

French Artist: JR, series 'Women are Heroes'(2009), Paris (F).

"The eye is used to desire. The memory to repeat. It may occur that in a reflex the two combine themselves & then apply an anthropomorphic look to the surrounding.
In this moment one can feel the eye sees tutelary figures in the trees’ monumentum, faces in houses’ façade and maternal matrix in the streets’ volume. In that sense, the town models us by dint of repetition.
The artist JR puts his finger on this repetition and pulls out of our intimate hotchpotch (in Belgium we would say our ‘brol’), extracts from our personal palimpsest, the accurate imago that dwells in the surimposed look of our daily life.
Precisely in the attached pictures, the human forms reintroduced in the urban forms belongs to images of poverty we already met in documentaries or in advertisement (here from favellas).
In the paraphrase of his work -the talkative & post-modern «contextual commentary»-, JR passes a slight different demarch: his work allegedly laudates women and humanity.
It has never been an easy piece of work to split in two personalities, i.e. to paint and to explain the painting at the same time; for this reason the ancients very cautiously prefered the silence (plus, mystery favoured art-business) and let the arbitrary nature arbitrate between the possible implications of a work of art.
So be it and let us merely claim that urban-art is animist &, whatever the motivations are, likes to put a figure on object’s soul".
