Sad announcement for angels in tuxedo:

The European Court of Justice could soon decide the municipality of Maastricht is right to prohibit the admission to ‘coffee shops’ of persons not resident in the Netherlands.
An opinion of the Advocate General was proposing this view to the European judges on 15 July.
Discrimination between consumers of haschich/pot/... would become for the first time lawful in Holland (i.e. in Europe).
All of this, of course, to fight against "drug tourism"'s disorders and illicit trade in narcotics "in the EU" (read "in the Netherlands"); the prohibition however- under due rules of economy- will make prices stiffer, products more desirable and illicit traffic's frequency in Europe higher. One might call that a counterproductive effect.
Next step: Amsterdam's lights closed to non-Netherland citizens?

The homo ludens, the internet's industry & the European Union #2

The idea is accepted that the Homo Ludens has per se no future in market economy's rules.
But how public the idea should be?
Euractiv reports that in some international negotiations between the EU and the US on this type of issue, the US have a taste for the dark side of the force.
More precisely, the ACTA (Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement) is a draft agreement that has - many times- roused suspicions among Internet lobby groups in the EU who fear that the deal will allow any government "to come down as hard on peer-to-peer file sharing as they would on commercial piracy".
A homo ludens deprived from his addiction to free peer-to-peer in the name of the eFight against ePiracy? Ah. The principle is obviously more or less easy to accept by public authorities according to the secrecy of its negotiation. Click here to be clicked to the unveiling.

(In apparence, an American answer to René Depestre from Glenn Ligon, Gold No Room #40, 2007 - as currently displayed in Santiago de Compostella in the 'Black Atlantic' exhibition of the modern art museum. The Depestre's strength is obviously in the transcendance of his geography and in his claimed position of a lucid but unified history; this strength mainly roots in poetry; this strength was contained and promised in the French-speaking artistic movement of 'Négritude' in the 30's which was hardly transposable and transposed in the USA. To be a 'nègre-tempête' (literaly a 'storm-niger') is rooted in the Antilles islands but offers a universal condition, even after 1967; that is clearly what Glenn Ligon in his painting reports to be impossible to experience in the US, even in 2007.)

It is time to take a Rabelaisian break: Brusqu'elles is on vacation for the rest of the month.

The Brusqu'elles' taste for blurred boundaries and pixelled memories has been fulfilled by Takeo Magruder with his clever representation of what is an Encoded Presence (no downloading, only on display) and by Ivan Chabanaud who perfectly sumps up the art of memory and the memory of the art in Nudity (no downloading, only on display): this might be the first time that software in art is not only a gimmick but finally a mastered tool for poetry.
